| EXPERIENCE: |
Director of Research, UMass Center for Research in Endoscopic Surgery
University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester, MA. 1996 - present
As part of the UMass Medical School’s Center for Advanced Clinical Technology, I create and develop devices in response to ideas generated while working with surgeons and medical researchers who are at the forefront of emerging technologies. Our goal is rapid development and commercialization of new technologies in cooperative effort with corporate partners.
For example the HandPort ä surgical system, developed in 1997-98 at UMass for Smith & Nephew, received FDA approval early in 1999, was issued US patent #5906577 in May of 1999, and entered the commercial marketplace at the end of 1999.
I am active in University efforts to commercialize intellectual properties and recruit new corporate partners.
Senior Industrial Designer/Engineer
Synectic Engineering Inc., Milford, Conn. 1996- 1997
Responsible for the creation and development of new medical and surgical devices based upon new and emerging technologies. Synectic is a Consulting Engineering firm, and my position involved coordinating all phases of product development, from initial idea generation and concept development through prototyping and documentation, providing comprehensive engineering and design service for a diverse client base of large medical manufacturing companies.
Director of Research and Development/Engineering
Davol / Solco, Inc. Hingham, MA, Subsidiary of C.R.Bard 1990-1993
Originated and developed new medical products, managing all phases of R&D including clinical trials, working directly with surgeons, physicians and medical personnel. Created and developed several new medical devices, including an autologous fibrin glue device for use in the operating room, a microprocessor-controlled hemodilution unit for blood salvage during surgical procedures, and an automated red blood cell-washing device for collecting and washing packed RBC's. Supervised the research efforts of an R&D and Engineering staff of seven.
Started a student co-op program and managed a support staff of freelance and temporary technical help. Developed many proof-of-principle prototypes. Produced documentation for FDA submissions.
Engineering Design and Industrial Design Consultant,
Integral Design Inc., Hingham, MA 1993 - present
Provide, design, engineering, product development, prototype construction and product documentation on a consulting basis. Provide manufacturing support that complies with FDA mandated GMPs.
Engineering Design Consultant
Arthur D. Little, Cambridge, MA 1993-1996
Provided new product development support on a project basis.
Director of Engineering,
New England Surgical Instrument/Kirwan Surgical Products, Rockland, MA. 1985-1990
Coordinated engineering activities for OEM and Direct Sales manufacturing. I worked directly with OEM clientele that included: Aspen Laboratories, Inc., Accurate Surgical & Scientific Instrument Corp. (A.S.S.I.), Baxter Travenol, C.R.Bard Inc., Birtcher Corp., Clinical Technology, Codman & Shurtleff, Inc., Downs, Mentor O&O, American V.Mueller (Baxter Healthcare), Smith and Nephew Richards, Inc., Storz Instrument Co., Valleylab Inc (Phizer Hospital Products Group, Inc.), and Edward Weck & Co., Inc.
Managed all R&D activities resulting in several patents, including a new hand switching electrosurgical system and a new fluid-proof electrosurgical pencil. Supervised QA programs, especially FDA required GMP. As Regulatory Affairs director, researched, wrote and submitted applications for 510k approval. Oversaw production and inventory control for manufacturing.
Design Manager,
Martin Copeland Co., East Providence, RI 1978-1985
Managed a staff of eight including designers, draftsmen, and model makers. Planned and coordinated production activities with engineering and marketing. Our efforts were directly responsible for tripling of the company size in only seven years.
